The flatmates of Jesse Baird slept at their Paddington home, unaware that his body, as well as that of his partner Luke Davies, were still there. The new revelations come as detectives work to piece together the Sydney couple’s final moments.
The pair's alleged killer, officer Beau Lamarre-Condon, is said to have wrapped their bodies in tarpaulin and placed them in the couple’s backyard.
It has been revealed Baird's housemates returned to a dishevelled home in Paddington last week Monday and went to bed, oblivious to what had just taken place.
They reportedly noticed a red stain but assumed Baird had spilled something, 7News reported yesterday.
Police will allege Lamarre-Condon returned to the home the next day with surfboard bags and transported the bodies to Bungonia in a white van he had hired. Speaking to 9News, detectives claimed the senior constable intended only to kill Baird and not Davies.
It is alleged he had to purchase a second surfboard bag before returning back to the bodies on Tuesday.
"We will be strongly claiming, in our case, that this murder was premeditated and the second murder occurred because, unfortunately, of Luke's appearance at the house," Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald said.
Police believe Lamarre-Condon visited Bungonia on two separate occasions following the alleged double murder.
Initially, he is alleged to have gone to a private property with an acquaintance, who was unaware of the situation, to dispose of the bodies. He then reportedly returned a second time to move the men’s bodies to another location.
Authorities will also allege Lamarre-Condon’s actions were premeditated. They claim he engaged in a “months-long” campaign of “predatory behaviour” towards Baird. This included breaking into Baird's house, keying his car, and pouring water into his car's engine block.
Following a two-hour interrogation on Tuesday, Lamarre-Condon allegedly drew a map after consulting with newly engaged legal counsel. Shortly afterwards, the human remains of Baird and Davies were found along a fence line between two properties.
"He agreed at the time to show us where the bodies were, allowing detectives to pinpoint the exact location where the two deceased were," Fitzgerald revealed.
The men's bodies were found in surfboard bags, partially concealed by rocks and debris.
Lamarre-Condon is accused of using his police-issued firearm to kill the pair before returning the weapon to police inventory.
The discovery of bloodied items belonging to Davies in South Sydney, located 30km from Baird’s home, initiated the police investigation and subsequent search of the Paddington residence.
Police are currently treating the case as a domestic violence incident.
