Early morning 4.7 earthquake wakes up Wellington

Thousands of Wellingtonians had an early wake-up call with a 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

GeoNet said the rumble was felt at 5.18am, with 11,012 reporting it as of 5.40am.

The quake was 5km northeast of Upper Hutt, at a depth of 20km.

GeoNet described the shaking as "moderate".
