Sydney double murder: Bodies of couple recovered, tributes flow

New South Wales Police have spent the night and this morning investigating a rural property where two bodies were discovered during a search for Jesse Baird and Luke Davies.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed to 9News the bodies had now been recovered after at least one family had visited the crime scene. Family members of Baird attended the site on Tuesday evening.

The bodies were discovered at a property in Bungonia, south-west from Sydney, after their alleged killer Senior Constable Beau Lamarre-Condon finally assisted detectives seven days into their investigation.

Police started searching the property on Sunday after receiving information the accused killer cop had been there twice last week.

For two days, they searched dams and waterways based on allegations Lamarre-Condon had purchased weights, but drew a blank. Police say Lamerre-Condon had at this point refused to help them with their search.

But — after the accused allegedly provided information about the bodies of Baird, 26 and Davies, 29, on Tuesday — detectives discovered the remains hours later in "two surf bags" near a "fence line, near the entrance to the property", according to Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty.

“We spoke to the accused in Silverwater Jail," Doherty said.

"As a result, he provided assistance and was able to provide a location of where Luke and Jesse were.

"This 28-year-old acted alone... he's the sole person involved."

Webb said there was a "shift in his cooperation" after the accused engaged new legal counsel.

Police will allege Lamarre-Condon killed the couple with his police-issued firearm in their Paddington home last Monday.

He is believed to have had some prior romantic interaction with Baird.

Vigil and memorial for Baird and Davies

Friends of both Baird and Davies gathered for vigils across Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Tuesday night.

A vigil for the couple was held in Bronte Beach while the sea of flowers continued to build outside Baird’s Paddington home. The lawn in front of the Bronte Surf Life Saving Club was dotted with friends in mourning as they hugged.

A portrait of Davies lay propped up on a rug next to a candle and flowers were also laid out a memorial in Bondi.

Some family members made the 160km pilgrimage south to the Bungonia property where the couple’s remains were discovered, about 20 minutes from the original search location.
