King Charles thanks public following shock cancer diagnosis

February 11, 2024

King Charles has thanked the public for their support following the shock announcement that he had cancer earlier this week.

Buckingham Palace revealed the diagnosis on Tuesday after the 75-year-old had undergone surgery for an enlarged prostate.

He has since scaled back from all public-facing duties while continuing to undertake state business and official paperwork.

In a statement released this morning, the King said: “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days.

"As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement."

The King said he chose to make his diagnosis public to "prevent speculation" and to "assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

In his statement today, he said it was "equally heartwarming" to hear how his diagnosis "has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and the wider world".

"My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience."

While the king undergoes treatment, it's expected his wife, Queen Camilla, and son, Prince William, will take up many of his public-facing duties.
