A woman has been airlifted to hospital after turning up at a Taupō petrol station on foot with serious propane burns.

Police were alerted to the incident at about 5.10am.

The woman had walked to a Mobil petrol station on Tongariro St after suffering her burns from a propane tank at a location near the Waikato River, a police spokesperson said.

"At this stage we don't have any further information about the circumstances."

An attendant at the station told 1News the woman arrived at the service window, "screaming that she was burning".

He called the ambulance. He said it was "like her skin was coming off... like peeling".

A St John spokesperson said one ambulance attended the scene before the woman was taken by helicopter to Waikato Hospital.
