Police have named the 10-year-old Australian girl who died after being swept down a creek in Fiordland last week.

She was Tegan Ariel Chen of New South Wales.

Chen and her family had been on holiday from Australia when she was swept down the fast-moving Marian Creek on Thursday. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 11.40am that day.

Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said she was located and removed from the water a short time later.

She couldn't be revived.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly difficult time," a police spokesperson said today.

"The investigation into Tegan's death is ongoing."

Police have previously addressed an incorrect rumour swirling around the incident.

"Our investigation into the circumstances of this incident is continuing. We are aware of speculation that the child fell from a viewing platform, however, this is incorrect," Bowman said.

"The family has lost a young daughter and a sister, and we are doing what we can to support them. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time and, understandably, they have requested privacy.

"Both police and Victim Support are working with the child's whānau, and a police family liaison officer is keeping them up to date with the investigation."

He described the creek as an "extremely fast-flowing, turbulent body of water".

"A report will be presented to the Coroner once the investigation is complete."
