A homicide investigation is underway in Christchurch after a local man was found dead in the suburb of Aranui early this morning.

Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said police were called after the 38-year-old was found dead in Carisbrooke St, near Portchester St, at about 2.28am. He had been found on the road.

"Local residents can expect to see a large police presence in the area as a scene examination and area inquiries commence this morning," Reeves said.

Reeves confirmed an "unusual noise" was what made informants call the police.

Investigators are now seeking sightings of a car they believe to be the victims, a white 2006 Toyota Crown sedan with registration plate LEQ895.

Reeves said the vehicle is currently "within our scene" but police are appealing to the public for any sightings or movements of that vehicle prior to 2am today.

Cordons are in place and Carisbrooke St is blocked.

Reeves said police are in the "early stages" of the investigation and have notified the family of the victim, but aren't yet in a position to release their name.

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out tomorrow.

Investigators would like to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything unusual in and around Carisbrooke St around 2am this morning.

People with CCTV footage which could help with the investigation are also asked to contact police on 105, quoting Operation Walter. Information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
