Finance Minister Nicola Willis has admitted “it’s been a year of bad quotes” after making another gaffe during question time today.
Labour’s finance spokesperson Grant Robertson asked Willis to answer in detail about how the Government would fund its tax package, but all Willis said was that there would be a series of revenue streams including the near $7.5 billion in savings outlined in today's mini-Budget announcement.
She prompted laughter from the House, however, when talking about the Government's tax package to be announced next year.
"What New Zealanders care about is the size of the sausage, not how it’s delivered."
The house erupted in laughter at the comment.
“Mr Speaker, it’s been a year of bad quotes from me,” said Willis.
Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters rose with a point of order, trying to deflect the questioning to Labour's Grant Robertson.
Robertson quickly interjected, "hang on, don't talk about my sausage".
Earlier this year, Willis asked then Finance Minister Grant Robertson "How big is his hole...", referring to fiscal holes, causing laughter to ring out around the debating chamber.
"That is not in the public interest I can assure you," Robertson shot back, not missing a beat.
"How big is his hole?" was number 5 on Massey University's list of 10 finalists for New Zealand's Quote of the Year covering the catchphrases, quotes and gaffes that defined the country in 2023.
