People in parts of the South Island may need to blast the air conditioning on Friday, as temperatures up to 30 degrees are expected.
A “warm” northwest front is expected to create foehn winds from the West Coast, pumping hot air down the Southern Alps into Canterbury.
MetService told 1News it predicts some roasting temperatures for places like Blenheim, which can expect temperatures up to 29 degrees.
Ashburton will also be sweltering, with temperatures likely to hit 28 degrees.
It will also likely be hot in Rolleston, Christchurch and Kaikoura.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Alps, rain is expected on the west coast of the South Island.
It comes after much of the country has been experiencing southwesterly winds — which are expected to end tomorrow.
