Matty McLean's time with TVNZ is drawing to a close and TVNZ chief correspondent John Campbell joined Breakfast this morning to revisit some of the outgoing presenter's most special interviews.

"This is so overwhelming," McLean said – but Campbell cut in.

"You love it!" he laughed, before introducing a clip from when McLean just about interviewed the whole population of Waimate at once.

"This is exactly what it was like when Matty was in the field," Campbell explained. "The town had turned out to see you.

"They were so chuffed you were there... People were always so delighted to see you."

Next up, Campbell revisited one of the departing Breakfast presenter's most heartwarming moments in the field.

It's Matty McLean's last week on Breakfast after seven years as host.

"Thing number two I want to share is your immense generosity and the way you let us all into your life," he said.

McLean's reunion with his brother and sister after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted world travel was broadcast live on Breakfast.

He hadn't seen them for three years. At Queenstown Airport, McLean greeted them with a huge hug.

"As you can tell, I'm the dramatic one in the family," he joked on air – while wiping away tears.

Finally, the pair watched an interview from the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle earlier this year.

"You actually, vividly put us there," Campbell said.

McLean revealed he plans to attend the interviewees' housewarming when their home is finally rebuilt.
