Te Pāti Māori MP Tākuta Ferris does haka during swearing-in

December 5, 2023

Te Pāti Māori MPs swore their allegiance to Te Tiriti o Waitangi as well as King Charles during today’s ceremony at Parliament.

On a day where Te Pāti Māori-backed protests were held in many parts of the country in a push back against some of the new coalition Government’s planned policies, MPs were sworn into the 54th Parliament.

Gerry Brownlee was elected Speaker.

Before that, all MPs were sworn in.

The MPs then took the traditional oath in a move that some have labelled narcissistic, and others, colourful. (Source: 1News)

MP for Te Tai Tonga Tākuta Ferris was the first Te Pāti Māori MP sworn in.

He swore allegiance to mokopuna and said he would carry out his actions in accordance with the treaty. During his turn NZ First MP Shane Jones could be heard saying "hōhā".

He then performed a haka before swearing the parliamentary oath to monarch King Charles.

Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, Takutai Moana Natasha Kemp and co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi also swore allegiance to Te Tiriti as well as King Charles, while Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke mentioned Māori King Kiingi Tūheitia during her statement.
