Fire and Emergency (FENZ) crews from across Auckland rushed to battle a blaze at Massey High School overnight.

Staff were called to the scene shortly after 11pm yesterday.

The fire was extinguished at about 12.30am this morning, a FENZ spokesperson said.

Crew members from West Harbour, Te Atatū, Henderson, Glen Eden, Auckland City, Albany, Waitakere, Parnell, Avondale, Takapuna, Ōtāhuhu, Greenhithe, Ōtara, Papatoetoe, Balmoral, Remuera and Birkenhead responded to the fire, the spokesperson added.

Cody McEnaney, chief fire officer at West Harbour Fire Brigade, confirmed the blaze broke out in the school's science block.

"Crews received multiple 111 calls to a commercial building on fire within the school complex," McEnaney said at the scene.

"On arrival, crews were met with a fully involved fire in the scientific block.

"Approximately 14 trucks on the incident ground and approximately 60 FENZ staff currently taking operations.

"At this stage, there doesn't appear to be hazardous materials involved. It's a fairly modern building, so we don't have too many concerns around the likes of asbestos and things like that."

There were no reported injuries and specialist fire investigators attended the scene, he said.

The cause is being treated as unknown "at this stage", McEnaney added.

A statement on the school's website confirmed it would be closed this morning.

"As this week is Junior Activity Week, only Year 9 and 10 students are at school," the statement explained. "For our students who are involved in off-site trips... we advise that these trips will still go ahead.

"Because there is no power at school, all students involved in on-site activities are asked to remain home until further notice."

Takapuna Grammar School, on Auckland's North Shore, is also shut today due to a power outage.

The school posted to Facebook saying: "TGS is experiencing a power outage and there is no timeline on this being fixed so normal operations are not possible.

"The school is closed for today and students are asked to stay home."

The post said junior prizegiving ceremonies will now be held next year.

"We are unable to access school systems to email this correspondence to caregivers."
