Police are asking for the public's help after shots were fired at or near a group outside a hotel in Palmerston North yesterday morning.
The incident occurred near a hotel on Rangitikei Street near King Street at 1am, where a “number of shots” were fired “at or near” a group of men standing outside the bar.
“It was sheer luck that no one was injured,” detective sergeant Dave Wilson said in a statement.
After the incident, police stopped a group of men nearby — finding two .22 calibre guns in their vehicle, but are “satisfied that these are not the same firearms that were discharged at the hotel”.
The five men were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and will appear in the Palmerston North District Court this week.
Police are still investigating the incident outside the hotel and would like to hear from anyone with information about the shooting and those responsible. People are being urged to call 105.
