There is "no risk to safety" from two "suspicious packages" left outside two buildings in Wellington this afternoon, according to police and the Defence Force.

"New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has confirmed there is no risk to safety from the item," police said of both packages.

One package was found on Brandon St, while another was found on Fitzherbert Tce.

Nearby schools were "placed into lockdown as a precautionary measure" after police were notified of the packages at 1.40pm and 1.50pm respectively.

The packages saw cordons put in place and nearby schools closed as a precaution. (Source: 1News)

Queen Margaret College was among the schools under lockdown as a precaution.

On its Facebook page, the college asked for students to be picked up as usual from Hobson St only.

Pedestrians and motorists were also asked to plan their travel in the city this afternoon.

"Police thank all those impacted by the cordons."

Investigations into the packages are ongoing.
