An inmate has been stabbed multiple times with an "improvised weapon" following an altercation at Auckland's Mt Eden prison, as staffing shortages in Corrections hit crisis point.

The inmate was injured after a fight broke out in the day room of a remand unit at Mt Eden Corrections Facility (MECF) on Friday morning, prison director Dion Paki told 1News in a statement.

The prisoner "received multiple puncture wounds from an improvised weapon" during the incident, he said.

He was assessed at the scene, before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

"He returned to MECF later the same day after receiving medical clearance," Paki said.

No staff were injured in the fight.

"The perpetrators were relocated to the management unit and are subject to directed segregation," he said.

Police were notified and are now investigating the incident.

Further disciplinary charges within the prison may be laid "pending the outcome of this investigation", Paki said.

"We have a zero tolerance for violence policy, and any violence or assaults against other prisoners or staff is not tolerated in prisons. Any prisoner using such behaviour will be held to account for their actions, including facing criminal charges."

As of November 3, there are 61 vacancies for Corrections officers from 469 full-time equivalent positions at Mt Eden prison.
