A railway detonator.

Police are investigating a break-in at a Hamilton railway yard, where "explosive canisters" were stolen.

The break-in occurred early on Saturday morning at a railway yard on Kent St in Frankton.

Windows of a train were smashed and the railway detonators taken.

The coin-sized explosives are used as a loud warning signal for train drivers.

Police are urging members of the public not to touch the detonators and to "call the police straight away".

"The real concern is that if these railway explosives get into the hands of individuals who are not experienced with explosives, they could seriously harm themselves or others," Detective Senior Sergeant Terri Wilson said.

Along with the explosives, police are also appealing for sightings of suspicious activity in the area between 12am and 3am on Saturday.

People with information are being asked to call 105.
