Raf Manji steps down as leader of The Opportunities Party

Raf Manji has this afternoon announced his decision to resign as the leader of The Opportunities Party.

It follows the party's failed bid to enter Parliament following the 2023 general election.

Manji said in a statement on Facebook today that the weeks following the election had allowed him "some time away from it all and consider the next steps for the party".

During TOP's annual general meeting today, Manji announced that he would be standing down as the party's leader.

"It wasn’t an easy decision to make but after a great deal of consideration I felt it was the right one for me and it’s time to hand it over to the next generation," he wrote.

"It has been a privilege to lead the party over the last couple of years and into the 2023 election. We set out some new ideas and accessible policies. Although we were not successful electorally, we did contribute to the political debate and left a positive impression with over 63,000 votes.

"It’s now time to look ahead to 2026. To that end, the party will hold a special meeting early next year to discuss party strategy, structure and processes. There is plenty of talent and enthusiasm around the party and lots of interest in future developments.

"Many thanks to our board, party members and donors who keep the engine running. Financial support is a prerequisite for political campaigning and we couldn't do this without you."

Manji is the third TOP leader to resign in three elections.
