A man who was struck by a vehicle while lying on the road in Auckland early this morning has undergone emergency surgery.
Emergency services were called to the scene in Pakuranga Heights at about 2.24am, a spokesperson said.
"A 33-year-old male has undergone emergency surgery in Auckland [after the crash on Walworth Avenue]," police said.
"The pedestrian had suffered critical injuries and was immediately transported to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
"Police believe the pedestrian was lying in the road, and in poor lighting, when he was struck by the vehicle."
The Serious Crash Unit was alerted to the incident and have begun an investigation.
A St John ambulance spokesperson said they sent two ambulances and one rapid response unit.
"We assessed, treated, and transported one patient in a critical condition to Auckland hospital."
