A "prolific" shoplifter, allegedly involved in more than 110 incidents resulting in $71,000 worth of items being stolen, was caught by police on horseback earlier this week.

Inspector Joe Hunter said the mounted officers had been attending a community event when they were notified about someone shoplifting in Pukekohe "moments before".

The officers were notified the "person of interest" was last seen with a trolley on Manukau Rd.

Hunter said the officers "hoofed it" towards the Pukekohe Train Station where the alleged offender was found and later arrested after "further units" arrived to help.

The 40-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with shoplifting. He is due to appear in the Pukekohe District Court tomorrow.

Hunter said the man has allegedly been involved in more than 110 shoplifting incidents in recent months.

"Police believe this alleged offending has totalled in over $71,000 worth of items being targeted."
