An elderly woman has died in hospital following an alleged sexual assault at a New South Wales aged care facility earlier this month.
Police allege a 34-year-old man broke into a facility in Bateau Bay on Australia's Central Coast on Wednesday 15 November, where he assaulted and sexually assaulted the 90-year-old woman.
The woman alerted staff after the attack and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The alleged offender was later arrested at a home in Caves Beach, near Lake Macquarie, and charged with a string of offences including aggravated sexual assault.
He was taken to hospital to treat minor injuries to his arm and was subsequently denied bail.
At the time, sex crimes squad commander Jayne Doherty said it was “horrendous that someone, any person in the safety of their home would be attacked like this, but to [allegedly] attack a very defenceless old lady is beyond belief”.

Doherty said the alleged assault appeared to have been an opportunistic attack.
