An Air New Zealand flight from Nelson to Auckland was diverted to Hamilton this morning after the flight and crew noticed the smell of gas inside the cabin.

Air New Zealand operational integrity and safety officer David Morgan told 1News customers of Air New Zealand flight NZ5060 disembarked the aircraft as a "precaution" in Hamilton, as part of standard operating procedure.

"The aircraft and its baggage hold will be assessed.

"Customers have been communicated with and alternative transport is being arranged for them to get to Auckland and we thank them for their patience and understanding."

Morgan added: "Our pilots and crew are trained to manage situations of this nature."
