You'd be pretty hard pushed to get a meal out for just $4 these days, but a Dunedin couple's making that a reality.

Liam Arthur and Jackie Barron believe no one should eat alone and cook over 1000 vegetarian meals for three nights a week at the Caversham Bowling Club.

"We need more spaces where people can see each other and see that we have a lot more in common than we have different," said Arthur.

He was inspired by volunteering with the legendary Jay-Mar at the Hare Krishna's $3 lunch at Otago University.

"She was like 'we should have one of these on every corner just like that is KFC and McDonalds.' I thought one day I would do that, but I didn't actually think I'd do it."

Today, queues are out the door. You can eat in, or bring your own container to take home. Often, the change goes in the pay it forward jar, just so other people can get free kai.
