Search continues for kayaker missing for nearly two weeks

November 3, 2023

Police will be searching Kāpiti Island and the surrounding area over the weekend for a kayaker who has been missing for almost two weeks.

Otāki woman Michaela Leger, 29, was last seen entering the water at Raumati Beach off the Kāpiti Coast around 8pm on October 21, on a yellow kayak she allegedly stole.

LandSAR will join police SAR in searching Kāpiti island with a focus on the eastern and northern coastlines, while the police maritime unit will search areas around the island, including neighbouring islands.

Leger was due to appear in court five days after her disappearance.

She was facing multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine and cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon, failing to stop for police, possession of drug utensils and refusing to give a body sample.

Kāpiti Coast residents have been asked to check any sleepouts or unoccupied buildings on their property for anything unusual.

Anyone with relevant information has been urged to contact them via 105.
