Fourteen firearms and a "large amount" of ammunition was stolen from a Hamilton East rifle club either last week or earlier this week, with police now asking the public for information on the burglary.

Police said the break-in reportedly happened between October 25 and November 1. A meeting at the club ended at 8pm last Wednesday, but the burglary was only discovered after a member visited the property at about 1pm yesterday.

Detective senior sergeant Terri Wilson said the items were taken from a secured safe.

"We understand the concern around events involving firearms.

"Police are treating this seriously and are pursuing a number of leads to identify these offenders and locate the items they've stolen."

Wilson said initial enquiries suggested power tools were used to break into the safe.

Loud sounds may have been heard by nearby residents at the time, Wilson added.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Hamilton police by calling 105, or anonymously contacting Crime Stoppers via 0800 555 111.
