AI named as Collins' Dictionary Word of the Year 2023

November 1, 2023
AI, which has seen a boom since the popular tool ChatGPT was released in 2022, is the Collins' Dictionary Word of the Year.

Collins' Dictionary has announced the 2023 Word of the Year, with the winner being the acronym AI.

AI, which stands for artificial intelligence, means the modelling of human mental functions by computer programmes, and is a popular tool used worldwide.

Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said AI had been "the talking point of 2023" after ChatGPT was released in 2022.

"We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology," Beecroft told The BBC.

When 1News congratulated ChatGPT, on AI's behalf, it responded: "Thank you for sharing the news. I don't have the ability to make official statements, but it's indeed a notable recognition for the AI field. AI continues to impact our lives in various ways, and this recognition reflects its growing significance in our society."

Other words in the running for the award were bazball, a style of cricket, nepo baby, a person who has been perceived as benefiting from nepotism by having famous parents and ultraprocessed, food prepared using complex industrial methods from multiple ingredients with little or no nutritional value, among others.
