Why the weather's been so bad and what to expect today

A weather expert said the upper and east North Island's recent rough weather will continue today – but, relief is on the way.

NIWA principal scientist Chris Brandolino told Breakfast the air is coming from the tropics and subtropics at the moment.

"Used to be tropical cyclone Lola, no longer is," he explained. "And that's dragging down moisture from the north.

"So that's the fuel, water vapour, so it feels kind of humid out there for the time of year.

"That's the why, that's where the air is coming from."

He said there would be more "problems" with the rain today, with over 50mm forecast in places.

"Coromandel, maybe Tairāwhiti Gisborne in terms of the rain in the ranges," he said.

"An unsettled week for much of the North Island [is on the way] with waves of rain and showers, even some thunderstorms, on and off throughout much of the week."

There may be issues with river flows in the most heavily affected areas, Brandolino added.

"Now, that's just one facet of the weather. The other is the wind.

"I was driving into work, plenty of debris around the road – so as you're driving into work, keep that in mind, there's probably some debris across much of Northland, Auckland and Coromandel," he said.

The wind should begin to weaken later this afternoon and into tomorrow, Brandolino predicted.

"Before this rain, it was actually quite dry across much of the North Island," he added. "But the rain has changed that of course.

"As we look ahead to the 8th, 9th and 10th of November – so just another 10 to 12 days – we are going to start to see that really persistently warm and dry weather we've been hearing about."
