A French national has been rescued from a yacht in distress 51km off the coast of North Cape this morning.
The Maritime NZ Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) said that the Juan Sabula activated its emergency position-indicating radio beacon due to loss of motor and damage to its rigging and sails.
Two EMS helicopters, one from Auckland and one from Whangārei, responded to the incident.
A NZDF Hercules was also en route, but was stood down.
The rescue helicopter from Whangārei winched the person off their yacht, a Maritime NZ spokesperson said at about 11.50am.
"[The helicopter] is currently enroute to Kerikeri to be met by NZ Customs."
Northland Rescue Helicopter Captain Steve Couchman said: "Swells forecast to be six metres were up to ten metres at times, with wind gusts up to 50 knots – a similar wind strength to Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been advised of the rescue and will contact the French Consulate.
