A duck family have been rescued from an Auckland motorway this afternoon – a mission which Auckland City District Police described as a “ducking close encounter”.

A video posted to Facebook show the “waddling” ducklings and their caregiver being safely escorted off the busy stretch of road in Mount Roskill.

“Thankfully our motorways team was happy to help get these ducks in a row and the whole family were returned to safer ground in no time,” said the Auckland City District Police.

The ducklings are not the first animals to cause a motorway disruption in recent times.

Earlier this year, a pig was reported as “on the loose” running down a motorway off ramp towards the city – and later became known for frequenting State Highway 16 for more than a week.

The "infamous motorway pig" that eluded capture for ten days is now up for adoption at Henderson Animal Shelter.

After eluding capture for 10 days, the pig, later named Kevin Bacon, was able to find a forever home in Taranaki where he was renamed Reggie.
