1 dead in North Canterbury crash, section of SH1 closed

One person has died after a crash this afternoon that has closed a section of State Highway 1 near Spotswood.

The crash happened around 4pm and involved several vehicles, according to a police spokesperson.

Two others involved in the crash received serious injuries.

St John responded with two helicopters, two ambulances, one first response unit and one manager.

Five patients were transported to Christchurch Hospital.

State Highway 1 is closed near the intersection of MacMillan Rd, police said, and authorities have been advising motorists to take alternate routes.

The serious crash unit is in attendance and police say the road is likely to remain closed for some hours.
