A house fire which left one person dead in Waitaanga, Ruapehu, yesterday is being treated as suspicious.
Emergency services were called to the "very rural, very remote" property before 8am on Wednesday and found one person dead.
The house was reportedly fully destroyed.
Detective Inspector Brent Matuku said a scene guard is in place while a scene examination continues.
"Police are working to identify the deceased, who will be transported to Palmerston North for a post mortem examination," he said.

"Inquiries into the circumstances of the fire are ongoing."
