Two Auckland shop workers have been injured after an attack by hammer-wielding offenders.

Police said a shop on St George St, Papatoetoe was entered just after 4am by people armed with hammers.

Two workers in the store were hurt during an altercation.

Cigarettes and other items were taken before the offenders got away in a stolen vehicle.

The workers are receiving medical attention and police are hunting for the attackers.
