Part of State Highway 7 near Lewis Pass is closed after a two-vehicle collision.

The crash occurred at 4.45pm.

Police say initial reports suggest there are critical injuries.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and follow diversions on Hanmer Springs Rd and Springs Junction Rd.

It is expected the road will be closed for several hours.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.
