State Highway 1 near Ōtaki north of Wellington is closed following a crash involving four vehicles.

The crash occurred at around 6am just north of Ōtaki.

Four people have been injured. Three were taken to Palmerston North Hospital - one in a moderate condition and two in a serious condition.

The other person was airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

Diversions are in place, motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
