Person dies after car plunges into Taranaki river

May 4, 2022

One person has died after their vehicle plunged into a river in Taranaki on Wednesday morning.

Police say the car entered the Waitara River from the Waitara Bridge around 10.15am.

In an updated statement on Wednesday night, police say the body of one person has been recovered from the car.

"The vehicle was removed this evening and the road is now open.

"A formal identification process will be undertaken to identify the victim."
