The widow of rugby star Sean Wainui, who died in a car crash last week, has posted an emotional tribute to her late husband online.

Paige Wainui also shared video of her receiving a tā moko on her ring finger, similar to one Sean had.

Sean Wainui, who played for Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Crusaders, Chiefs and the Māori All Blacks died in a single-car crash at McLaren Falls and was farewelled on Sunday at Te Wainui Marae in Gisborne.

"I don't have the words right now or could begin to describe the feeling of losing you baby all I know is I don't wish this on anyone," Paige Wainui wrote on Instagram.

"I'm in absolute pieces and in so much pain knowing my whole other half to me has left this earth.

"But I will forever celebrate you my love for being the most amazing and incredible husband & father you were and the special years we got to spend together on this earth."

The couple had two young children - son Kawariki and daughter Arahia.

Paige Wainui received the moko from Te Wehi Preston, "who received a text & dropped everything to travel with his whānau to receive my Mokowhiti".

"It was truly a special moment as he did Sean’s mokowhiti to resemble our marriage and our tamariki."

Tributes have flown for Sean Wainui since his death, both for his exploits on the field and the way he carried himself off it.

Wainui, 25, represented the Chiefs, Bay of Plenty and the Māori All Blacks.

He would have turned 26 on Sunday, the day of his tangi.
