There are 43 new Covid-19 cases in the community on Tuesday, 40 in Auckland and three in Waikato, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has confirmed.

Nineteen of the new cases are un-linked to the current outbreak, with investigations ongoing.

However, all three cases in Waikato are household contacts of previously reported cases. They were already in isolation.

Now, 14 of Monday's 35 cases remain unlinked, with investigations still ongoing for those as well.

The total number of cases in this Delta outbreak is now 1664.

There are now 34 Covid-19 cases in hospital, including five in intensive care or a high dependency unit.

Of the cases, 17 are at Middlemore Hospital, nine are at Auckland City Hospital, six are at North Shore Hospital, and one each at Waikato Hospital and Palmerston North Hospital.

"The UN worker who was referred and treated here for Covid-19 illness has made an excellent recovery and is being discharged from Middlemore hospital after a total of 76 days in hospital," the Ministry of Health said.

The ministry earlier on Tuesday confirmed a woman has tested positive for Covid-19 after travelling from Auckland to Northland with another woman, who also contracted the virus.

She was taken into police custody last night after being uncooperative.

Both of these cases are now in quarantine in Auckland.

"There are currently 18 close contacts associated with the original case, and of these 17 have been located and tested and are isolating, the remaining person is being actively followed up by our contact tracers," Bloomfield said.

"Public health staff in Auckland are working closely with both cases to determine any further locations of interest or exposure events and are making progress there."

There are now 2262 contacts linked to the current outbreak, of which 77 per cent have been contacted and 75 per cent have received at least one test.

As of 1pm on Tuesday, there were 636 locations of interest on the Ministry of Health's website , including eight new exposure sites.

On Monday, 16,565 tests for the virus were carried out, including 13,981 in Auckland. There has now been more than 3.61 million since the pandemic began.

On vaccinations, on Monday 69,118 Covid-19 jabs were administered in New Zealand, made up of 15,107 first doses and 54,011 second doses.

In total, more than 5.9 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in New Zealand since the pandemic began.

Northland and parts of Waikato are at Alert Level 3, Auckland is at Level 3 with some restrictions eased and the rest of the country is at Level 2.

There were also three new Covid-19 cases reported at the border on Tuesday.

One of the new cases arrived from Russia via the United Arab Emirates on September 29. They tested positive on arrival in Auckland.

A historical case arrived from South Africa via Qatar on September 24. They tested positive on arrival in Auckland.

These two border cases were classified last month as under investigation but following a review of records the cases have now been reclassified as confirmed.

The final border case on Tuesday arrived from Ukraine via Turkey and Singapore on October 9. They tested positive on arrival in Rotorua.

The new cases bring the total confirmed cases in New Zealand since the pandemic began 4345.

There were no unexpected Covid-19 wastewater detections to report on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joined Bloomfield for Tuesday's update.
