A person is in a serious condition after being shot by police in the Auckland suburb of Hillsborough.
It comes after a suspicious vehicle fled from police in Ōtāhuhu about 9am on Thursday.
Police say the vehicle came to a stop on Hillsborough's Lilac Grove, where the person, who had a firearm, was shot.
Another person in the vehicle has been taken into custody.
Police say no other people from the vehicle are being sought.
"Residents in the area are advised that there is currently a heightened police presence in response to this incident.
"A further update will be provided once additional details are confirmed."
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said it had transported one patient in a critical condition to Auckland City Hospital.
Another person with minor injuries was treated at the scene.
Hillsborough resident Jessie Crawford told 1News she was in her kitchen but looked out the window when she heard vehicles roaring up the street at a "great rate".
The alleged offenders vehicle did a bit of a skid as it turned into Lilac Grove, she said.
"The cops followed him down and that was it."
Crawford said she heard a couple of gunshots as other police vehicles came "screaming up the road".
She described the alleged offenders vehicle as a sedan and believes its occupants tried to flee along a nearby boardwalk as Lilac Grove was a dead-end street.

Local Jordan Harris said he was feeling "anxious" as the incident had unfolded so close to home.
He described seeing "swarms" of police officers wearing bullet-proof vests with their weapons drawn as the incident unfolded.
Seeing some parademics wearing them too was "unreal".
The Little Oven Café nearby earlier saw a number of police vehicles and ambulances go past their Frederick St address.
This included armed police officers.
1News received reports the police Eagle helicopter could be seen overhead.
