After an impressive debut in international Twenty20 cricket, Devon Conway could be on track for a Black Caps Test debut after being called in to the squad as injury cover.

BJ Watling has suffered a hamstring injury as the team prepares for their first Test against the West Indies in Hamilton, leaving coach Gary Stead to confirm Conway has been summoned to join the squad.

Stead described the wicketkeeper's injury as "a slight hamstring niggle".

The coach did warn that Conway is his second option if Watling is unable to play on Thursday.

If there was a change, Tom Blundell would take the gloves and move down to No.6 in the order with original batting cover Will Young the more likely to debut as an opener.

Watling's injury comes after allrounder Colin de Grandhomme and spinner Ajaz Patel were replaced in the Test squad last month by Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner.
