All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith has his sights set firmly on the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, following this year's semi-final defeat to England.
Having won the Webb Ellis Cup in England four years ago, Smith could have gone back-to-back in Japan this year, before the All Blacks' campaign came undone against England in Yokohama.
At the age of 30, it's still entirely conceivable that Smith will still be playing come the next tournament to be held in France.
However by that time Smith will be 34, and with the ever-reliable New Zealand rugby production line, it's possible that he will no longer hold the first choice number nine jersey.
What's more, Smith's current New Zealand Rugby deal runs through until the end of 2021, leaving the possibility for him to finish his playing career overseas.
Speaking to media today though, Smith outlined that he intends to give making the 2023 tournament squad, taking inspiration from 34-year old captain, Kieran Read.
"Looking to the future, I've been thinking about [it] a bit this week," he said.
"Reado turned 34 last week, and he's still going brilliant. I'm 30, I say there's hope, it doesn't mean I'm going to make it like he did.
"Us halfbacks don't take as much knocks, I suppose the only challenge will be if I'm there mentally, and if I'm still fit enough or quick enough.
"That's a long way off. My contract's a two-year deal, if you could talk to them to make if four, I'm keen."
