'We're starting to see the old Sonny' - SBW earns rave reviews from All Blacks coach

October 3, 2019

Sonny Bill Williams' impressive display against Canada may just be a sign of what's to come from the veteran midfielder, having shone in the 63-0 win in Oita.

After a season that's seen him dogged by injuries through both Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship, 34-year-old Williams got through 51 minutes of last night's victory, scoring and assisting another for Beauden Barrett with a deft kick through the Canadian defence.

With the likes of Jack Goodhue, Anton Lienert-Brown and Ryan Crotty all waiting as midfield options, Williams will have a fight on his hands to keep hold of his starting spot come the latter stages of the tournament, however Hansen is confident in what he saw last night.

"He played really well tonight," Hansen said of Williams.

"He's got a kicking game, I think he's done that kick about four times and we've scored four times from it.

"Four times since 2011's not a lot of kicking is it? But it's effective.

"He played really well tonight. He's been coming, he's been working hard, he's injury free [and] we're starting to see the old Sonny.

"[I'm] very happy with him."

Hansen wasn't the only one to publicly praise Williams' efforts, former All Blacks lock Ian Jones another admirer of last night's display.
