One person is missing hours after a boat sank with three people on board in the Far North tonight.

Police were called to reports of a sunken boat in Hihi, near Doubtless Bay, at 7.45pm, they said.

Two people have been accounted for and are in stable condition.

The boat itself has also been found. 

The Coastguard also responded to the incident tonight, they confirmed to 1 NEWS.

A search will continue tomorrow morning.

MetService issued a gale warning in place for the area overnight.
