Māori All Blacks coach Clayton McMillan is looking forward to seeing what Akira Ioane delivers for his side, out to prove himself to Steve Hansen ahead of this year's World Cup in Japan.

Overlooked once again as the All Blacks named a 41-strong squad for their first two Rugby Championship Tests against Argentina and South Africa, Ioane will instead turn out for the Māori All Blacks, with two matches against Fiji to try and impress selectors.

Speaking as his side was announced today, McMillan spoke about Ioane's non-selection, hoping to get the best out of the barnstorming loose forward.

"Aki was a really strong performer for us on the end of year tour last year," McMillan said.

"Depending on who you talk to, he had some bloody good moments in Super Rugby this year.

"I'm not privy as to why he hasn't been selected in the All Blacks, but clearly there's areas for improvement.

"Every time he steps out in a jersey, let alone a Māori All Blacks jersey, he should play like he has a point to prove."

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen indicated yesterday that fitness was once again the reason for passing on Ioane.

“I think it’s the same problem he’s always had, he comes into the season probably not as fit as he could have been,” he said. “Trying to get fit while playing every game for the Blues, he’s a tired athlete.

While Hansen said he knows "what's under the surface", it's up to Ioane to realise his own potential.

“You can only lead a horse to water, you can’t make it drink - so he has to decide to get thirsty,” he explained.

The Maori All Blacks' first clash with Fiji comes on July 13 at Suva's ANZ Stadium.
