Sonny Bill Williams isn't quite ready to settle on what he'll do after this year's Rugby World Cup although there's one choice that has jokingly crossed his mind.

"Maybe Steve Tew's job," he laughed.

But on a more serious note, the All Black says his main focus right now is on cracking the World Cup squad in the first place with the midfield a contested position.

"God willing, if I make that World Cup squad I think, straight after that I'll make a decision on what I'm going to do," he said.

Williams has been linked to a potential return to rugby league after the World Cup, with Canadian club the Toronto Wolfpack reportedly willing to offer him a $5 million deal for one season.

"Footy's just a game at the end of the day but I still have that fire and determination to be the best player I can be and compete.

"The day that I wake up and I don't have that, that's the day that I know it's probably time to move on."
