The Auckland Harbour Bridge will be lit up this weekend to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The bridge opened on this day in 1959, creating a critical link between the North Shore and central Auckland.

Cars backed up for nearly 10 kilometres on the north side for a chance to cross the new bridge. It cost two shillings and six pence to cross - roughly $5.50 in today's money.

A Vector lights show will run every 30 minutes between 6pm and 10pm until Monday to mark the occasion.
