New Zealand’s Treasury boss Gabriel Makhlouf has been appointed as Governor of Ireland’s Central Bank.
The Briton is the first overseas official to head the bank.
It’s a surprising move as his name was never mentioned in media speculation and Irish candidates had sought the role.
He has served as New Zealand’s Treasury secretary and chief executive since 2011.
Ireland’s finance minister said he would bring a “wealth of experience” to the role.
The position also includes a seat at the table on the European Central Bank’s Governing Council.
Mr Makhlouf’s last day at the New Zealand Treasury is June 27.
He will begin his new role in September.
