Studies have shown that American adults spend the equivalent of 49 days on their phones or devices each year.
In addition, on average they unlock their phones 80 times per day.
Many of those adults are also parents which means time spent on their devices means time spent away from their children.
The ABC’s Diane Sawyer spoke with researchers looking at how this is affecting babies and toddlers.
The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends that under 18-month-olds should avoid screens entirely – with the exception of a small amount of FaceTime with family.
