Drone footage shows great white shark feasting on fish at Sydney's Bondi Beach

May 2, 2019

A great white shark lurking near an apparently unaware surfer at Sydney's Bondi Beach has been captured on camera.

A drone pilot told Nine News he felt helpless when he noticed the shark near the surfer.

The footage showed the shark eating a fish - what's thought to be a tuna.

Rob Norman was out to capture shots of the popular beach at sunset and was standing about a kilometre from where the surfer was.

The videographer was hoping to get some footage of a seal that had been frolicking in the waves over the past few days and thought he was in luck when he saw a dark shadow in the ocean.

But it wasn't long until his happiness turned to horror when he realised the figure was a shark and was slowly tracking toward a lone surfer.

"When I saw it I didn’t know what to do – I was too far to yell or anything," Mr Norman told Nine News.

"It was actually horrible to watch… I was ready to crash [the drone] into the water – that’s the only thing I could think to do," he added.

The shark appears to be about the same length as the man's board, which is about five or six feet long.

"It didn’t look aggressive but when it started to go for him I was worried – he had no idea."

Luckily, the surfer tried to catch a wave and the shark veered back toward the south end of the beach away from him.

"Luckily it just turned away," Mr Norman said told the publication. "We shoot some pretty insane action all over the world but never thought we'd see something as insane as this."
