A 33-year-old man entered no plea today after a bomb scare in the Christchurch suburb of Phillipstown last night.

Jay Michael Harding-Reriti faces six charges over the alleged incident; four of carrying explosives and ammunition, namely power gel, improvised explosive devices, and .22 calibre rounds, as well as two of possessing knives.

Police said they located a package last night at a vacant address on Newcastle Street containing a suspected explosive device and ammunition.

The New Zealand Defence Force EOD team rendered the package safe and the man was apprehended by police at a service station in Aranui.

Harding-Reriti has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court for a bail application hearing next week.

Police are not seeking anyone else over the incident and are not linking it to the Christchurch terrorist attack.
