Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has hailed the influence of the Japan-bound Ryan Crotty, now playing what will be his final season in New Zealand.

Crotty, 30, yesterday revealed he's signed for Japanese club Kubota Spears , and will leave New Zealand after the 2019 season.

Speaking to media today, Robertson detailed Crotty's presence within the Crusaders' squad, having played nearly 150 games for his hometown side.

"Crotts [Crotty] is a unique individual," Robertson began.

"He's extremely detailed. As a coach you have to give him all the facts, it's a real sell to get him to buy it. His knowledge of the game, his ability to understand the game and perform at a high level is pretty special.

"We'll miss him, he's given a lot to us.

"He is the glue of the backline, 100 per cent."

Robertson also detailed Crotty's most important role with the Crusaders, one that comes off the field.

"Most importantly he organises the coffee off the field, and looks good doing it."
