Having yesterday confirmed his departure from New Zealand at the end of the 2019 season, All Blacks and Crusaders midfielder Ryan Crotty says he's prepared to miss out on World Cup selection later this year.
After missing selection in both 2011 and 2015, Crotty appeared in the frame for his first Rugby World Cup in Japan later this year, establishing himself as a key figure in Steve Hansen's side.
However, having yesterday confirmed his departure to join Japanese side Kubota Spears from next year, Crotty risks being overlooked for the World Cup in favour of a player committed to staying in New Zealand past 2019.
Speaking to media today though, Crotty said he was happy with the risk he's taking, still confident of playing in his first World Cup.
"I guess that's the risk you take," Crotty said.
"You've just got to back yourself, back your decision and play the best possible footy you can for your club.
"It gives you the best possible opportunity to get selected for the World Cup."
There have been exceptions of players still being selected despite announcing overseas moves, with Tawera Kerr-Barlow still included on the 2017 end of year tour, having signed for French side La Rochelle.
